Angelo Sambunaris, MD

Certified physician investigator (CPI) lifestyle wellness specialist, and Angelo Sambunaris, MD, brings over 20 years of experience in mental health care, neuropharmacology, and addiction medicine to Dr. Sambunaris & Associates in Alpharetta, Georgia, serving patients throughout Fulton County and the southeastern United States.

Dr. Sambunaris began his professional education at the University of Colorado Denver, where he earned his medical degree. After graduation, he completed his internship in the department of medicine at Hershey Medical Center of the Pennsylvania State University in Hershey.

Dr. Sambunaris then returned to Colorado and completed his psychiatric residency in the department of psychiatry at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. He enrolled in the Psychiatry Career Resident Program (an externship), General Adult Psychiatric Services, at Colorado State Hospital in Pueblo.

At the end of his externship, Dr. Sambunaris became a fellow of the Neuropsychiatric Research Hospital National Institute of Mental Health in Washington, DC, and entered private practice in 1998.

When Dr. Sambunaris isn’t spending time with patients or adding to his professional skills, you can find him leading scientific research studies on depression, anxiety, insomnia, and ADD. Dr. Sambunaris also studies and treats ailments associated with chronic pain, including fibromyalgia and migraine headaches.

Dr. Sambunaris is a proud veteran, having served in the US Army and the Colorado National Guard. He achieved the rank of major in the Army and lieutenant commander in the US Public Health Service as a clinical staff fellow at the National Institute of Mental Health. His military background fuels Dr. Sambunaris’ passion for research into and treatment of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Dr. Sambunaris also enjoys teaching and serves as an adjunct professor of pharmacology at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. In 1998, he founded the Atlanta Institute of Medical Research, where he is the owner and lead investigator, which is now known as the Institute for Advanced Medical Research.
